409 Stainless Steel

409 Stainless Steel  is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel with better oxidation and corrosion resistance than carbon steel. It's low nickel and high carbon content make it one of the most economical stainless steels available. Like other 400 grade stainless steel, 409 is magnetic. Common uses for 409 Stainless include exhasuts, agricultural spreaders, heat exchangers, and exhaust silencers.

Resists atmospheric and automotive exhaust gas corrosion. A light surface rust can form in most atmospheres. This rust retards progressive corrosion but makes the surface undesirable for decorative applications.
Good resistance to scaling in intermittent service to 1425°F and in continuous service to 1400°F.
Annealing – Heat to 1400°F – 1500°F, and air cool. 409 grades cannot be hardened by thermal treatment. Voidability Roadlly welded but a preheat of 150° – 260°C (300° – 500°F) is recommended.
